Dependent prepositions (Adjectives) — meaning, contrasts & production -Part 2
În Part 1 ai reținut perechile ca blocuri (adjective + preposition).
În Part 2 facem un upgrade: alegi prepoziția în funcție de ce vrei să transmiți.
1) „Same adjective, different preposition” (diferențe de mesaj)
-responsible for vs responsible to
- responsible for = responsabil pentru rezultat/efect/ceva produs
She’s responsible for the budget. - responsible to = responsabil în fața cuiva (raportare/autoritate)
She’s responsible to the director.
-angry about vs angry with / at
- angry about = supărat din cauza unui lucru/situații
He’s angry about the decision. - angry with / at = supărat pe o persoană (mai ales)
He’s angry with me. / He’s angry at his boss.
-good at vs good with
- good at = abilitate (skill)
She’s good at explaining grammar. - good with = „se descurcă bine cu” oameni/lucruri (handling)
She’s good with teenagers. / good with numbers
(Nu e o regulă universală, dar e o distincție foarte utilă.)
2) Nu reține liste. Reține „familii” (și nu mai greșești)
- to-family = reacție/tendință: prone / immune / resistant to
- of-family = capacitate/conștiență/atașament: capable / aware / proud of
- with-family = potrivire/coerență: compatible / consistent with
- on-family = dependență: dependent on
- for-family = cauză/rezultat: famous / responsible for
Challenge practice
A) Alege prepoziția corectă (unele au două variante posibile — alege cea mai naturală în context)
- I’m not aware ___ any changes to the plan.
- The conclusion isn’t consistent ___ the evidence.
- She’s responsible ___ ensuring the team delivers on time.
- He’s responsible ___ the CEO, not the project manager.
- I’m angry ___ the way the meeting was handled.
- I’m angry ___ him for cancelling at the last minute.
- This version isn’t compatible ___ older devices.
- He’s dependent ___ his parents financially.
- She’s proud ___ what her students achieved.
- Some people are more prone ___ anxiety when they’re sleep-deprived.
- I’ve never been particularly good ___ small talk.
- She’s good ___ kids, even difficult groups.
Răspunsuri (A):
- of
- with
- for
- to
- about
- with (și „at” poate apărea, dar „with” e foarte natural aici)
- with
- on
- of
- to
- at
- with
B) Upgrade: rescrie fără să schimbi sensul:
- She can handle difficult clients calmly. → (capable of)
- This report matches the data from last month. → (consistent with)
- He relies on caffeine to get through the afternoon. → (dependent on)
- They don’t react to criticism easily. → (immune/resistant to — alege sensul)
- He often gets stressed under pressure. → (prone to)
Sugestii de răspuns (B):
- She’s capable of handling difficult clients calmly.
- This report is consistent with the data from last month.
- He’s dependent on caffeine to get through the afternoon.
- They’re resistant to criticism. / They’re not immune to criticism. (diferență: resistant = se opun; not immune = sunt afectați)
- He’s prone to stress under pressure.
